Maker Lab Studio

Course Overview:

Maker Lab Studio is a hands-on, project-based course where students explore digital design and creative problem-solving using Adobe Creative Cloud tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, Animate, and InDesign). Guided by the Design Thinking Process (Discover, Define, Design, Develop, Deliver), students will develop real-world skills in graphic design, animation, branding, and multimedia storytelling.

Through collaborative and independent projects, students will create portfolios showcasing their ability to ideate, prototype, and refine digital artwork. Whether designing logos, animating short films, or crafting print publications, students will gain industry-relevant skills while expressing their creativity.

Key Learning Objectives:

Assessment: Project-based evaluations, peer critiques, and self-reflections. No exams—just creativity in action!

  1. Master Adobe Tools: Develop proficiency in Photoshop (image editing), Illustrator (vector graphics), Animate (2D animation), and InDesign (layout design).
  2. Apply Design Thinking: Solve creative challenges using the five stages:
    • Discover – Research, empathize, observe, and gather inspiration
    • Define – Identify problems, frame the challenge, and create goals
    • Design – Brainstorm, prototype ideas, ideate, and plan solutions
    • Develop – Create prototypes/iterations and refine and test solutions
    • Deliver – Present polished final projects
  3. Build a Professional Portfolio: Curate a digital portfolio showcasing projects like posters, animations, logos, and magazines.
  4. Collaborate & Present: Work in teams, give/receive feedback, and present work to peers and community audiences.

  • Community Service: What problem needs solving?

Outcome: Students leave with technical Adobe skills, a problem-solving mindset, and a portfolio ready for college, internships, or personal passion projects.
